Water inputs across the Namib Desert: implications for dryland edaphic microbiology

چکیده

Microbes have a dominant role in nutrient cycling processes the world’s deserts, where growth and activity are limited by availability of water. In order to understand dynamics water desert system how it may affect soil microbiome, we analysed temperature relative humidity fluctuations recorded between April 2018 2020 across precipitation gradient Namib Desert compared them with data from satellites nearby weather stations. This allowed us assess possible impact fog rain events terms biologically-available Using published literature on limits for various physiological microorganisms, were able infer annual ‘metabolic windows’ microbial communities longitudinal gradient. Specifically, surface estimated capacity active an average 184- 363 hours per year duration heavily dependent intermittent rainfall events. During relatively wet period - March 2019, maximum window was found hyper-arid central region transect (approximately 100 km coast). dryer 2019- period, there almost no predicted but substantial metabolic windows both near coast eastern inland areas, input comes form moist coastal air, higher rainfall, respectively. As first detailed study characteristics near-surface soils, this provides valuable insights into biogeography communities. addition, estimates organismal functionality calculated offer baseline future quantitation impacts climate change functional microbiomes.

Niche-Partitioning of Edaphic Microbial Communities in the Namib Desert Gravel Plain Fairy Circles

Endemic to the Namib Desert, Fairy Circles (FCs) are vegetation-free circular patterns surrounded and delineated by grass species. Since first reported the 1970's, many theories have been proposed to explain their appearance, but none provide a fully satisfactory explanation of their origin(s) and/or causative agent(s). In this study, we have evaluated an early hypothesis stating that edaphic m...

Namib Desert dune/interdune transects exhibit habitat-specific edaphic bacterial communities

The sand dunes and inter-dune zones of the hyper-arid central Namib Desert represent heterogeneous soil habitats. As little is known about their indigenous edaphic bacterial communities, we aimed to evaluate their diversity and factors of assembly and hypothesized that soil physicochemistry gradients would strongly shape dune/interdune communities. We sampled a total of 125 samples from 5 paral...

Genetic connectivity across marginal habitats: the elephants of the Namib Desert

Locally isolated populations in marginal habitats may be genetically distinctive and of heightened conservation concern. Elephants inhabiting the Namib Desert have been reported to show distinctive behavioral and phenotypic adaptations in that severely arid environment. The genetic distinctiveness of Namibian desert elephants relative to other African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana) popul...

Plant Responses to an Edaphic Gradient across an Active Sand Dune/desert Boundary in the Great Basin Desert

In arid ecosystems, variation in precipitation causes broad-scale spatial heterogeneity in soil moisture, but differences in soil texture, development, and plant cover can also create substantial local soil moisture heterogeneity. The boundary between inland desert sand dunes and adjacent desert habitats exhibits abrupt changes in soil and vegetation characteristics that may be associated with ...

Tick infestation of baboons (Papio ursinus) in the Namib Desert.

Chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) living in an arid environment in Namibia were heavily infested with ticks of the genus Rhipicephalus. A survey to assess tick numbers and identity was undertaken in the baboons' habitat. It appears that there is a strong correlation between the number of ticks and the amount of time the baboons spend in an area. It is speculated that tick infestations were respons...
